Colds (contagious, viral, infectious disease of the upper respiratory tract "URI")

These symptoms can be life-threatening.


  • nothing can shorten the duration of a cold, symptoms last an average of 7-10 days and antibiotics do not help a common cold
  • airborne droplets carry the virus and are passed by contact with contaminated objects (hands, doorknobs, utensils, etc.) Young children in daycare often have 1 cold /month
  • children are contagious until 2-3 days after symptoms begin
  • hoarseness, dizziness and/or sneezing are more associated with viral rather than bacterial infections
  • consult with your Health Care Provider, before using over-the counter (OTC) expectorants, antitussives, lozenges, decongestants or antihistamines
  • Urgent Care - Have you identified one or more of the following symptoms?
    • fever of 100.4 ((rectal) or greater for longer than48- 72 hours, and/or not responding to fever-reducing medication (acetaminophen or ibuprofen)
    • signs of dehydration (dry mouth, little or no urine output, little or no fluid intake, "soft spot" (fontanel) is sunken, no tears)
    • facial swelling, pain, redness, aching eyes, jaw pain
    • chest pain
    • wheezing or shortness of breath (SOB)
    • sore throat with fever of 100.4 ( or greater for longer than 48-72 hours
    • sinus pain
    • pain in ear or discharge from ear
    • severe sore throat and coating on tonsils or throat
    • symptoms no better after 7-10 days of following self-management advice

    Contact Your Health Care Provider.

    Self-Management - You can help in the following ways:
    • take temperature
    • watch for signs of dehydration (dry mouth and lips, little or no urine output, little or no fluid intake, "soft spot" (fontanel) is sunken, no tears)
    • cool mist humidifier in child's room
    • decongestant for nasal congestion as recommended by your Health Care Provider (children over 6 months only)
    • encourage rest
    • encourage drinking fluids
    • salt water gargles for sore throat for child 8 years or older (1/4 teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces warm water every 2 hours)
    • one teaspoon of corn syrup for sore throat for child less than 6 years of age or older
    • stay away from smoke
