Preconception Lifestyle
Many women do not know that they are pregnant until several weeks or even months have passed. The early weeks of pregnancy are the most critical in the development of the fetus. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle while attempting to conceive is very important.
While many women strive to achieve a certain body type, being underweight or overweight is not advisable when planning for pregnancy. Underweight women are more likely to have small babies that have difficulty during labor. Overweight women are at increased risk for developing high blood pressure or gestational diabetes. Overweight women are also more likely to suffer from pregnancy-related discomforts. Obesity puts an added strain on the woman's heart during pregnancy.
A woman's nutritional needs will change as pregnancy progresses in order to meet the needs of the growing fetus. Before conception however, just eating a healthy and balanced diet will ensure that both mom and baby have a good start.
Tobacco, alcohol and drugs can cause significant, permanent defects to a developing fetus. It is advisable to quit using these substances before conception. A physician may be able to help in the difficult process of quitting.
