If I Am Diagnosed With HIV, What's Next?
Before being tested for HIV antibody, you should have a plan for what you would do if the results are positive. Anxiety, anger, denial and depression are common reactions. You should discuss the way you feel with friends, family or mental health professionals.
It is important to understand that HIV infection is by no means a death sentence and that people typically live for many years after the diagnosis. There are now many effective drugs available for treatment of HIV infection and for prevention of complications. You may benefit from medical therapy even if you have no symptoms. Make an appointment with your primary care provider, or, if you do not have one, ask your testing site or local HIV/AIDS service organization for a referral to a doctor experienced in treating HIV disease.
