After LASIK Surgery
After LASIK, the majority of people are able to pass a driver's license test without glasses or contacts (20/40) and experience no pain and minimal discomfort. Most patients report an immediate improvement within the first day following surgery. Some patients experience blurry vision that may fluctuate for several days, but most do not experience this symptom. Since a patient's condition, healing powers and physiology are unique, not everyone should expect to achieve full visual correction. People with high to severe levels of myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism may require an enhancement procedure to achieve the desired results.
- 95% of patients will have their vision corrected to 20/40 or better
- 85% of patients will have their vision corrected to 20/25 or better
- You will be able to wake up, see the alarm clock, watch TV and movies and drive without glasses or contact lenses
- Occasionally, patients still need glasses for night driving
- People in their mid-forties may need to wear reading glasses
LASIK is performed on an outpatient basis using an "eye drop" anesthetic for painless surgery. LASIK normally takes less than 15 minutes for both eyes and the patient leaves shortly after the procedure. A clear eye shield may be placed on the eye for temporary protection and to keep you from rubbing your eye in your sleep. Drops are used to prevent infection. Immediately following the procedure, patients are able to read letters on the eye chart. After LASIK, patients usually return to their normal lifestyle quickly.
To be eligible for LASIK your vision must be stable. Because a stable refraction is necessary, patients must be over the age of 18 to have the procedure.
